Blog #10

I believe the most effective way to use data collection/surveys as a teacher (that I would use) is to gain feedback on the course and how you ran it, specifically if you're a first time teacher.  This can give you a really great outlook on what students appreciated about your course and what they think could be improved.  This also comes from the student perspective and will give you an in-depth look into what it was like for them.  I also think the utilization of Excel is something I would use when creating my grade book for my class.  This is because I can complete calculations that will easily come up with final grades for my students.  Specifically, if I were an elementary school teacher I could create different sheets for each subject to keep everything organized.  I would say the most interesting things to read about on my classmates' blogs were their experiences with each platform we used/each assignment.  This really helped me connect to ever...

ILP #2

Here is the link to my second ILP!  I decided to attend the Digitech exhibition and honestly had a great time! If you are here at FSU next year, definitely check it out! https://voicethread.com/share/12405244/

Thursday's Class!

First, I want to say a huge thank you to those who took my survey!!! Disney is favorite thing so I'm super excited to see your responses. The three ILP's I chose to look at were: Elizabeth's (Participation on Lynda.com with "Keynote"), Morgan's (Participation on Lynda.com with "Improving Your Memory"), and Kadi's (Participation on Lynda.com with "Learning to Write a Syllabus").  I chose these three because I did Design for my first ILP and wanted to see how some classmates did the Participation option.  Each ILP I explored was super intriguing and were super different based on content/what they chose to learn about. The three survey's I took were: Anna's (Favorite Foods), Penny's (History), and Hilary's (Eating Habits).  These survey's also offered completely different subjects to offer my input on which I thoroughly enjoyed!

I think the "The Flipped Classroom" is an intriguing idea.  This concept alters standard instruction and make the learning process a more interactive and individualized approach.  Much of class time is spent on the initial instruction and gives little time for practice.  By flipping the classroom and making the initial learning process a home-based thing, students can then come in and work through their specific struggles and questions regarding the subject.  The classroom then also becomes a place for advanced collaboration.  These students begin to work through these concepts together and generate new ideas along the way with their peers and the teacher.  Flipping the classroom can give these students a chance to really dig deeper into the concepts.  It also rids time spent on the introductory of a concept, which is an increasing problem when it comes to assessment of knowledge. Open educational resources allow for continuous, typically online, acc...

Qualtrics Survey!

Hey all!  Here's my survey that I created.  Due to my love for Disney I decided to theme my questions off of that and play around with a few different question types.  Thanks for taking it! https://fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6D3KiGdo3814hbD

I definitely did gain quite a few new skills with Diigo.  Prior to working with this platform, I was extremely into bookmarking.  I am constantly bookmarking all the important things I need on a day-to-day basis and storing them on my Bookmarks Bar.  This is such an effective way to keep track of everything and stay organized.  With Diigo I was able to take that initial skill and now learn how to make these bookmarks public and accessible for everyone.  A skill that I gained from this process, that I actually really appreciate, is the ability to make public comments/highlighting on the actual page being bookmarked.  This helps you keep track of thoughts and voice your opinions and understandings of the content.  I think it could definitely be beneficial in a classroom setting during a research process for a particular project because of its way to compile findings into one central place. PowerPoint is a really great platform to creatively display you...

So far, Twitter has been a pretty easy and insightful experience.  Being pretty familiar with it before I felt as though I didn't necessarily have to learn anything new.  Despite being out of touch with it for a few years I immersed myself back into the platform and it seemed like I never left.  Using Twitter has a lot of benefits, personally and professionally.  The one that I feel is the most beneficial are the connections that can be made through it.  This helps a lot of people who are just starting a career in their field and then can learn about companies or people that might interest them and find ways of getting into further contact with them.  Twitter allows you to personally create a brand for yourself based on the content you post and the people you follow and interact with on there. I had a pretty great time designing my website!  I found it very enjoyable to create something in a really hands on way.  There were times when I found th...

The school website I decided to take a closer look at is Springwood Elementary School here in Tallahassee .  This is the school I was required to volunteer at for my EDF2085 service learning component.  The website is extremely simple to navigate and is designed in a very appealing way with the two primary colors being the school's colors.  Right when the website loads you can see different tabs that direct you different places within the site.  The 6th tab is for "Teacher Pages".  The first teacher page I decided to look at is for Mrs. Aker's First Grade Class, nicknamed "The Apple Orchard".  Mrs. Aker has included quite a bit of information within her page.  The most eye-catching is the "Welcome to First Grade!" tab which is colorful and inviting with an adorable graphic of an apple tree to represent "Mrs. Aker's Awesome Apples".  She has also included things like spelling lists for the first 9 weeks of school, a supply list, classr...

ILP "Design" - Google Classroom

Hi everyone! For my Independent Learning Project I decided to design a classroom site using Google Classroom. I really love this educational platform because it is extremely easy to develop (for the teachers) and it is extremely easy to navigate (for the students). I also love this platform because it's such a great way to get students to stay organized and up to date on all assignments and things going on in the class. One thing to note about this platform is that it should be used if and only if all your students have the ability to access technology at home. In my VoiceThread you'll see my design of a Google Classroom site for a 9th grade drama class.  I chose this grade level because high schoolers have a much easier time working with this type of technology.  In my design you'll see assignments that have been created under the "Classwork" tab and the categories they fall under.  I decided to create assignments for the first month of the school year, which i...

When we initially were introduced to Diigo in class I was honestly fascinated!!!  I love the ability to bookmark pages on any web browser because it is a great way to save research and come back to a project if you need to.  Bookmarking is also a great way to stay organized, even aside from doing project/paper research (ex. sites that you visit frequently for school and personal uses).  In terms of Diigo, I really like that it is a way to share research with your peers and friends.  If you are working on a group project it would be a great way to keep things compact and keep your ideas all in one space.  Using it as a teacher is also a great idea because it is a reference point for all the students in your class where they can turn to if they may be feeling stuck in a certain assignment/project they are working on.  I also like the fact that Diigo lets you customize the bookmark when you are saving it through your browser (ex. hashtags, headline, etc.). When I was first introduced to Twitter my freshman year of high school, I had no idea how it worked.  Everything about it confused me and I just didn't know what the purpose of it was.  Due to this, I just never used it.  My Twitter sat there in the void of the Internet just not being anything.  It sat like this until the next year when I decided to give it another go.  I decided to let my brain deal with the frustration and move past it because Twitter was a hot commodity and everyone who was anyone was tweeting.  Thus I fell down the rabbit hole and became entranced by Twitter-land and everything I could know in an instant.  I used it to connect to celebrities, politics, and even my friends at school.  Did I find it useful? Absolutely.  There was a certain power to having a Twitter and being able to tweet out my thoughts and opinions on a platform where everyone was doing the same.  Being able to know all about what was going on in the...

I definitely think that the ELA technology standards I would be most comfortable teaching in this moment are those for grades K-5.  Although there are a wide range of standards for these grades I believe that they each build on each other.  I feel very comfortable with the standards for 5th grade, especially LAFS.5.RL.3.7, which states "analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth, poem)".  I am very comfortable taking a piece of text that utilizes various forms of storytelling, especially those in visual form due to my extensive background in theatre and work with young students.  I would say the standards that I would need work on are those for high school 9-12.  This where standards get to be a little challenging but I feel like with this class I',m developing many more skills to be able to reach that goal. Due to my desire to teach th...

I have been using Microsoft Word for a very long time in terms of my education.  It has been a huge part of my academic life, especially in college, because it is where I write all of my theatre studies papers and write all of my little assignments for my classes.  Through Microsoft Word, I have developed my skills in formatting different types of papers (ex. spacing, headers and footers, etc.).  I have also exercised my knowledge of different types of academic paper format, mainly utilizing MLA format for my theatre studies work.  I have seen my teachers use Microsoft Word a handful of times, mostly in college in the form of the class syllabus.  Many of my teachers have also used Word as a way to display the specific format they want for a particular assignment, which becomes a great way for students to be guided through an assignment like a checkpoint system. Being a theatre major, I have to read quite a lot of plays for my abundant amount of theatre studies...

Teachers and students are influenced to use technology in the classroom by a number of things.  The biggest influencer on use of educational technology is the active role technology takes on.  Students and teachers become actively engaged in the material/subject matter because types of educational technology make everything more interactive and exciting to work with.  Another influencer is the need to adapt.  Education is consistently being changed as a direct influence of developing technology.  It is important to acknowledge this and work it into the classroom in a way that allows students to become comfortable with the technology but also simultaneously learning the material. The ISTE Standards are a great way to engage the different communities in the world of education.  It gives students, teachers, and anyone else a unique way of approaching education in the ever-developing world of technology.  One of the standards that I connect to strongly i...

ISTE Creative Communicator Resource

The resource I chose is Google Arts and Culture.  It is a creative online educational platform that gives students access to different artists, museums, and artwork around the world.  With this platform you can tour museums and learn about the history behind a certain form of art or art piece.  I chose this resource because it can bring students to the fingertips of art in a non-traditional and creative way.  It gives them a unique outlook on the artistic world where they can pave their own way.  It also gives them access hundreds of articles that can be used for many different types of creative research.  This website is incredibly creatively stimulating for students everywhere. First Day!

Hi everyone!  My name is Gabby and I am currently in my last semester here at FSU.  My major is theatre and I decided last year to pick up a minor in education, so here I am.  Upon graduating in May my goal is to return to London, which is where I completed my study abroad program during Fall 2017.  After that I would like to attend graduate school for theatre education.  There are a great number of grad school programs in this field all over the country so the goal is just choosing the right one for me, although I would love to be in New York.  I have one sister who is also involved in theatre!  She works as the Production Stage Manager for Slow Burn Theatre Company down in Ft. Lauderdale and loves every minute of it. My prior experience with educational technology is pretty basic.  I grew up working with Smart Boards in my classrooms, mainly starting in my later years of elementary school and feeding into middle and high.  I also was requ...
