Blog #6

The school website I decided to take a closer look at is Springwood Elementary School here in Tallahassee .  This is the school I was required to volunteer at for my EDF2085 service learning component.  The website is extremely simple to navigate and is designed in a very appealing way with the two primary colors being the school's colors.  Right when the website loads you can see different tabs that direct you different places within the site.  The 6th tab is for "Teacher Pages".  The first teacher page I decided to look at is for Mrs. Aker's First Grade Class, nicknamed "The Apple Orchard".  Mrs. Aker has included quite a bit of information within her page.  The most eye-catching is the "Welcome to First Grade!" tab which is colorful and inviting with an adorable graphic of an apple tree to represent "Mrs. Aker's Awesome Apples".  She has also included things like spelling lists for the first 9 weeks of school, a supply list, classroom wish list, and a link to the class blog.  This blog is where parents can go to see what's going on in class for the week and what the students are up to.  Many of the other teacher pages don't include anything about the teacher/class and seem as though they have been neglected.  The others that have been utilized by the teacher are very similar to Mrs. Aker's and include a lot about them, the class, and what's happening weekly.

Technology is incredibly useful when entering your professional life.  It is a great way to network and keep in touch with professional contacts.  One way to use technology to accomplish professional responsibilities is to keep up with a website that has to do with your profession/what kind of work you're trying to obtain.  Keeping up with websites is really common within an arts related field.  Many actors and those who work in technical production (stage managers, set designers, etc.) maintain a website and keep it up to date with what they are currently working on.  These websites often include their resumé, which they will often have to update frequently once they complete a project.  This is something I definitely plan on doing as I enter the field of theatre education in a non-academic setting.  I would also like to utilize my Instagram as a platform to promote the projects I'm working on and where my professional contacts can go if they wish contact me.  Instagram is a great way to show what you're working on in an artistic and stylistic way.

I had an amazing time visiting the TechSandbox!!! It was amazing to see all the technology I had no idea existed and learn more about it.  One of the pieces of technology I really think would be beneficial in my classroom is the ClearTouch.  It is very similar to SmartBoard and Promethean boards because it is an interactive screen where you can display things for the whole class to see.  The feature of it that I really love is that it is able to lay completely flat so multiple students can interact with it like they are writing on a piece of paper or playing around on an iPad.  The ClearTouch is also able to open multiple applications, which is a great way to get students interacting with different things at the same time.  I think the 3D printer is also a great way to get interactive because you can create so many things and implement them into your lesson.  Specifically, if you are teaching science and the class is learning about human anatomy and bone structure you can print a bone or multiple ones and have your students really learn what the bone looks like.  This type of education gets the students more connected to the subject and gives the lesson a "wow" factor.
